Who writes this

Mud Tires is written and maintained by one person. This page says who, what the work actually consists of, and — just as importantly — what it does not.

Bill Belcamino

I compile and audit the published specifications behind mud-terrain tires. That is the whole job description, and I want to be precise about it, because the phrase “tire review site” usually implies something I am not doing.

I do not test tires. Mud Tires has never run a tread-wear test, a braking test, or a noise measurement, and nothing on this site is presented as my own measurement. The methodology page states this in more detail and I would rather you read it than take my word here.

What the work actually is

Every figure published here is traced to one of two places: a manufacturer’s own specification, or a third-party rating platform. Each one is recorded with the date it was retrieved, so you can check whether it still says what I say it said.

The useful part is the reconciliation. Manufacturers publish a great deal, and a surprising amount of it disagrees — with a competitor’s figures, with a rating platform, and sometimes with the marketing copy printed beside it on the same page. Finding those contradictions and documenting them is what this site is actually for.

The same principle drives the price tracker. Tire prices move, published prices go stale quietly, and almost nobody records what a tire cost a year ago. I take a dated reading every month so that in a year there is a record worth having.

What I will not do

I will not describe a tire as though I have driven it. I will not fill a gap in a manufacturer’s data from memory or from forum consensus — where a manufacturer publishes nothing, the page says so. And I will not rank tires on data I do not have. Inventing a ranking would be easy and it would make the page worse.

When first-hand testing does begin, the protocol will be published before the testing happens, not after the results are in.

Corrections

If a number here is wrong, or a source has changed since I recorded it, I want to know. Corrections are made to the page itself with the date updated, not quietly. The fastest way to reach me is through the contact details in the footer.
