Mud Tires for a Toyota Tundra

Every current Tundra leaves the factory on a P-metric tire about 32.5 inches tall, and the heaviest one has a 7,780 lb GVWR. That leaves a much thinner tire-capacity margin than on a Tacoma, which changes the load range answer. Here is what the published numbers say, and what fits.

Start with what Toyota fits

Toyota’s 2026 Tundra product information shows the same pattern on every third-generation (2022 on) trim: P-metric tires, not one LT. The SR gets P245/75R18. The SR5 gets P265/70R18 on 18s or P265/60R20 on 20s. Limited, Platinum and 1794 Edition get P265/60R20, the Capstone P265/50R22, and the TRD Pro a 33-inch Falken Wildpeak all-terrain in P285/65R18 on forged BBS 18s.

Worked out from the sidewall numbers, every one of those is between 32.4 and 32.6 inches tall. Toyota sized every trim to nearly the same height; only the wheel changes. The second generation (2007 to 2021) ran P255/70R18, P275/65R18 (TRD Pro included) and P275/55R20, all close to 32 inches.

Tire sizes from Toyota’s 2026 and 2021 Tundra product information. Heights are calculated from the size, not measured.

The load range question, in numbers

A 2026 Tundra’s GVWR runs from 6,990 to 7,780 lb depending on cab, bed and drivetrain. At the top figure that is 1,945 lb per corner.

The retail version of the TRD Pro’s Falken Wildpeak A/T3W in 285/65R18 is a 116T Standard Load tire rated 2,756 lb. A P-metric tire fitted to a light truck has its rating divided by 1.10, which leaves 2,505 lb per tire and 10,022 lb across four: about 29% more than the heaviest Tundra is allowed to weigh.

That is a far thinner margin than on a Tacoma, where Toyota’s factory tire carries 60% more than the truck’s GVWR. On a Tundra, a Load Range E mud-terrain is not wildly oversized. In LT285/65R18 it is rated 3,640 lb at 80 psi: 14,560 lb across four, 1.87 times the top GVWR.

Towing is where that margin gets used. Toyota rates the Tundra to tow up to 12,000 lb, and a trailer’s tongue weight sits on the rear tires. If you tow near the rating, the extra casing of an LT tire is capacity you can actually use. If you never tow, the E casing mostly buys stiffness you will feel on washboard. Either way you rarely get a choice: in the Tundra sizes below, almost every mud-terrain is Load Range E, and a few 35s are F.

The weight penalty

The Tundra starts heavier than a Tacoma: the Wildpeak A/T3W in 285/65R18 is 50 lb on tiresize’s figures. A mud-terrain in the same LT285/65R18 size weighs 62.0 lb (Maxxis RAZR MT) to 67.3 lb (Nitto Trail Grappler), 12 to 17 lb more per corner.

Go to 35×12.50R18 and the range is 72.9 lb (BFGoodrich KM3) to 81 lb (Trail Grappler and Toyo Open Country M/T): 23 to 31 lb more per corner, roughly 92 to 124 lb of extra unsprung, rotating mass across the truck.

What fits without a lift

Toyota publishes no maximum tire size, and we found no lift supplier publishing a no-lift maximum for either generation, so we will not invent one.

What the numbers do show: LT285/65R18 is the TRD Pro’s own size in an LT casing. The six mud-terrains we track measure 32.6 to 32.8 inches in it, within about 0.2 inch of stock, which makes it the one mud-terrain size that barely changes height on an 18-inch-wheel Tundra. On 20s, LT275/65R20 measures 34.1 to 34.5 inches, about 1.6 to 2 inches taller than stock.

What a lift actually buys

ReadyLIFT publishes a tire size for each Tundra kit, which makes its claims checkable. Its 2-inch front leveling kit for the 2022-on Tundra states a 34-inch maximum, with 295/60R20 on a 20×9, +18 mm offset wheel as the no-trim maximum. It is not for trucks with factory rear air or for the TRD Pro, and ReadyLIFT recommends its heavier CV axles on every lifted 2022-on Tundra.

Its 6-inch kit for rear-air trucks states 35-inch tires on a 20×9 wheel at 18 to 20 mm offset, and 37s with trimming at 10 to 13 mm offset. It is not compatible with the TRD Pro’s Bilstein coilovers.

For the 2007–2021 truck, ReadyLIFT’s 2.4-inch leveling kit states a 33-inch maximum; its 3-inch kit states 33 inches, or 35 on a positive-offset wheel with trimming; its 4-inch front, 2-inch rear kit states 34 inches. None of the three is for the TRD Pro. If you own a Pro, check the kit page before you buy anything.

Gearing and the speedometer

The 2022-on Tundra pairs its twin-turbo V6 with a 10-speed automatic and a 3.31 differential ratio. Toyota lists 4.30 for the 2021 truck’s 5.7-litre V8 with the tow package.

Going from a 32.6-inch stock tire to a 34.3-inch LT295/70R18 is about 5% taller; to a 35×12.50R18 measuring 34.5 to 35 inches, about 6 to 7%. The speedometer and odometer read low by the same share. On a 3.31 axle, a 34.8-inch tire makes the truck behave as if it had roughly a 3.1 ratio. Our tire size calculator does this arithmetic for any size pair.

What is actually made in Tundra sizes

All six mud-terrains we track (BFGoodrich KM3, Nitto Trail Grappler, Toyo Open Country M/T, Falken Wildpeak M/T, Maxxis RAZR MT and Milestar Patagonia M/T-02) come in LT285/65R18, LT275/70R18, 35×12.50R18 and 35×12.50R20. Two sizes are thinner on the ground:

Note the last column. The 35×12.50 sizes carry less per tire than LT285/65R18 or LT295/70R18: in R20, 3,195 lb against 3,640 and 4,080. A bigger tire is not automatically a stronger one, and on a truck that tows that matters.

What we would buy

Keeping stock height on an 18-inch truck: LT285/65R18, in whichever of the six is cheapest that week (the price tracker has dated prices). It is the TRD Pro’s own size in an LT casing, so nothing new rubs, the speedometer stays honest, and at 3,640 lb a tire it carries nearly double the heaviest Tundra’s GVWR.

Wanting more height on 18s: LT295/70R18 at about 34.5 inches, from the four makers that offer it. It is the highest-rated size here, and it is right at or just over the 34-inch maximum ReadyLIFT states for its 2-inch kit on a 2022-on truck, so check the kit’s wheel offset first.

On a lifted truck with 20s: 35×12.50R20, after reading the load column above. If you tow near the rating, Load Range E is not overkill on this truck the way it is on a Tacoma, and the F-rated 35×12.50R20s from Nitto, Toyo, Maxxis and Milestar are worth pricing.
